About
OBX Room in the Inn, Inc. is a non-profit 501C3 organization that was established in 2009 by Gail Leonard and Claiborne Yarbrough. We have assisted hundreds of guests over the past 12 years.
The Mission of the OBX Room in the Inn, a faith-based organization, is to provide hospitality, food, and shelter to homeless adults in the Outer Banks during the winter months and support services year-round. We partner with approximately 19 churches to provide food weekly for our guests. We work alongside and collaborate with churches, Interfaith Community Outreach, Dare Challenge, The Manteo Lions Club, Community Care Clinic, Crossroads, Dare County Sherriff's office, and many others to provide services to our guests.
We have a new Executive Director, Shari Fiveash, that will assist our guests with case management services. We also have a wonderful group of volunteers that are working with guests to provide assistance in obtaining life skills, knowledge of local resources, housing, employment, and other services needed to assist our guests in becoming productive citizens.
Our program will begin on November 1st, 2023 and extend until April 30th, 2024. If you know a person that needs refuge, a warm bed, food, or assistance with other services, then please tell them to give us a call at (252) 255-1133.
Our office/intake center is located at 111 W. Carlton Avenue, Kill Devil Hills, NC. Our intake process starts each day from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Each person that arrives at the center will go through an intake process that entails a breathalyzer, a belongings search, paperwork, and a background check prior to entering the program.
Each person will be asked to sign a waiver that states they will follow the OBX Room in the Inn policies, procedures, and instructions of the program which includes respecting others, being alcohol and drug-free when sheltering in the program, and when attending appointments at the intake center. Each guest will be asked to treat others with dignity and respect and to behave in a way that is free from violence, threats, and intimidation.
Each guest has the right:
-
To use our services without discrimination.
-
To be safe and to be treated with dignity and respect.
-
To be treated objectively and professionally.
-
To participate in the development of individual program goals and plans
-
To be served in confidence, except in situations involving criminal activity.
Funding for our operations has always been through grants, donations from churches, community organizations, businesses, and individuals. Our Board of Directors also conducts fundraising events each year. Thank you for your interest in our program.
The difference you make makes all the difference.
