Last week, we wrapped up our 16th season of providing shelter for homeless adults on the Outer Banks. From November 1st until closing, we provided 1,643 room nights and 4,935 meals to those in need. Most importantly, nearly every guest left the shelter employed, taking meaningful steps toward rebuilding their lives.
Finding stable housing in the Outer Banks is challenging, but we remain committed to helping our guests transition out of homelessness. This season, we were able to secure long-term housing for six of our guests! Thanks to the United Way of Albemarle grant, we helped them cover security deposits, easing their journey toward stability. We will continue to stay in touch with them, offering support as needed. Our dedicated team worked tirelessly to find housing and are still searching. If you know of affordable housing or available rooms, please let us know—we are actively seeking placements for a few remaining guests.
We couldn’t have done this without the support of 20 local churches that partner with us. Thanks to you, thousands of meals were served—each one a gesture of kindness and care. A special shoutout to Nags Head Church, whose volunteers not only conducted a deep clean of the shelter after closing but also completed much-needed updates to the intake center, ensuring we're ready for the next season.
Additionally, we extend our deepest gratitude to Melody Kesterson and the HomeGoods team. Melody went above and beyond, providing donations that allowed our guests to choose new bed sets, bathroom décor, wall art, lamps, and more—turning their new spaces into true homes.
To Our Incredible Team- From intake staff to shelter coordinators, our team is the heart of this mission. They are truly a well-oiled machine, adapting to challenges, supporting every guest’s unique needs, and working tirelessly to ensure a safe and welcoming space. A few of our long-term team members shared, "This is the best season we have had!"—a testament to their passion and dedication.
Because of you, lives have changed, hope has been restored, and our community has come together in ways that truly matter. Your kindness and support make this mission possible.
Although our shelter is now closed for the season, we are still providing food, clothing, and support services. If you know someone in need, please send them our way.
We look forward to reopening the shelter on November 1st. Thank you!
